Responsible Gambling

Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not income, it is not a way to recover a loss, and no system, strategy or staking plan changes the maths. A regulated market changes who supervises the operator; it changes nothing about that. If gambling has stopped feeling like entertainment, this page matters more than anything else on this site.

Age limits in Canada

The minimum age is set provincially, like almost everything else in Canadian gambling. It is 19 in most of the country and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. There is no version of this site intended for anyone under those ages.

Set the tools before you deposit, not after

Every operator worth using puts these in account settings. They work far better set in advance, when nothing has gone wrong, than reached for in the middle of a bad session.

  • Deposit limits. A cap per day, week or month. The most effective single control, because it binds before the money moves rather than after.
  • Loss and session limits. Where offered, a ceiling on losses or on time spent in one go.
  • Reality checks. A periodic on-screen reminder of elapsed time. Easy to dismiss, which is itself worth noticing.
  • Cooling-off and self-exclusion. A short break, or a longer block you cannot reverse on impulse. Self-exclusion is the strongest tool available and it is designed to be hard to undo.

One caveat we would rather state than skip: a deposit limit is a setting, not a safeguard. It binds one account at one operator and does nothing about a second account somewhere else. In a province with a regulated market, a provincial self-exclusion register covers the province's approved sites and does not reach an offshore one.

Signs worth taking seriously

  • Depositing more than you decided to, or more often than you meant to
  • Playing to win back a loss
  • Gambling with money committed to something else, or with borrowed money
  • Hiding how much you play, or how much you have lost
  • Gambling to manage stress, boredom or low mood

Where to get free confidential help in Canada

Support is provincial, free and confidential. We deliberately do not print phone numbers here, because a number we copied from memory and got wrong would be worse than no number at all. Go to the organisation directly for its current contact details:

  • ConnexOntario, for gambling, mental health and substance use support in Ontario.
  • The Responsible Gambling Council, a Canadian non-profit with self-assessment tools and provincial resource directories.
  • Gamblers Anonymous, for peer support meetings across Canada, in person and online.
  • Your province's own gambling helpline. Every province funds one, and your provincial health authority's site lists it.
  • Your family doctor. An underrated first step, and the fastest route to a referral.

Blocking software and self-exclusion

If you want gambling sites blocked at the device level rather than account by account, tools such as Gamban, BetBlocker and GamBlock exist for that purpose. Device-level blocking is the option that does not depend on which province you are in or whether the operator is supervised there.
